Address: 701 Truxtun Ave, Bakersfield, CA 93301, USA

Bike Bakersfield is proud to announce our bike rodeos will be coming to the Beale Memorial Library from March 27-30, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. We have scheduled two dates for each session to accommodate the interest by the community. Participants should plan on attending both sessions.

Bicycle rodeos are one of the most effective ways to teach students bicycle safety. Using Bike Bakersfield staff’s League of American Bicyclists certification, experience teaching kids these skills, and passion for safety, we setup a multi-stage obstacle course for students to ride bikes in an interactive environment.

These events focus on small groups of youth at a time as they learn the skills needed to be safe while riding on local streets:

  • Safety Lecture: Session one begins with a safety lecture where students learn the ABC  quick check and the importance of biking. After this students learn the rules of the road, such as which side of the street to ride on, and others pertinent to their safety. The lecture concludes with students learning hand signals.Bicycle safety lectures are a great way to teach road safety to a large body of students in an open environment where our staff can engage students about bicycle safety. At the end of each lecture Bike Bakersfield provides safety quizzes and questions to test students understanding of the information that was presented. After the lecture, prizes are awarded to students who answer questions from the talk.
  • Proper Helmet/Bike Fitting: After students learn the basics of road safety they are fitted for their bikes. This is an important part of the program because it maximizes students comfort and ability to ride a bike. After fitting bikes, students are taught how to wear their helmet properly. A small number of helmets may be available to give students in need. Learning this helmet technique is crucial as an improperly worn helmet will not help a person if they fall or are involved in an accident.
  • The Skills Course: After the lecture and bicycle/helmet fitting students learn bicycle handling techniques, turning, and breaking by riding through a course designed by our staff. While fun for the students, they also learn the skills needed to be safe while riding their bikes on local streets.
