Smart Cycling Course

09/27/2018 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Bike Bakersfield
Address: 1708 Chester Ave, Bakersfield, CA

Bike Bakersfield is hosting a Smart Cycling Course where you will learn all about your bike, riding in traffic, riding outside of traffic, signaling, turns, intersections, chains, cranks, cassettes, helmets, gear… the list goes on! We want you to ride safely, predictably and this course will teach you how! Plus we’re going to have a great time while we do it.

Certified cycling instructors will lead the class, covering where to ride and how to manage traffic safely. The class information and structure is a condensed version of the League of American Bicyclists Smart Cycling class.

We will be riding on the streets downtown practicing the skills discussed after the safety presentation. You will need a helmet and a working bike for the class. If you need either of these, please come to Bike Bakersfield and we will get you fixed up!

Instead of paying for the course, participants are recommended to become a member of Bike Bakersfield. In addition to receiving the membership benefits, members will be allowed to take their smart cycling quick guides home to keep as a reference.

The class is free for Bike Bakersfield Members.

Second Saturday is a great time to join in on the monthly buzz and fun happening in downtown Bakersfield.

Join us for a family-friendly, all-ages cruise starting at Beach Park and following the bike path to the Marketplace. Experience a gorgeous Bakersfield night at 8 p.m. while feeling the wind blow as you pedal your bike with friends and family down Kern River Parkway Trail.

All ages and skill levels are encouraged to come. The ride is a comfortable, 10-12 mph pace and welcomes riders of all kinds.

Lights and helmets are strongly encouraged. The ride will follow the Kern River Parkway Trail west from Beach Park and turn South at CSUB, continue on the bike path through CSUB campus, and end at the Marketplace.

California Vehicle Code requires bicyclists under age 18 to wear a helmet. The vehicle code also requires bicycles to have a front facing headlamp and at least a red rear facing reflector when being ridden at night. It’s not only the law, but a great way to keep yourself safe.

The ride is finished once the group reaches the Marketplace, so make sure you have a plan to get back to where you started! Some like to park at the Marketplace and ride to Beach Park prior to the start of the ride so they may enjoy the rest of the evening without having to ride back.
