Ready to start commuting but don’t know how to navigate traffic? Want to know how to ride safely? Sign up for our Smart Cycling class.

As part of our educational programs, Executive Director and League Cycling Instructor Jack Becker takes the lead in hosting these once a month courses.

Now you can take part one of this three part course on Second Saturday at Bike Bakersfield. Part one consists of a classroom presentation where we discuss how to follow the law, be predictable, be conspicuous, think ahead, and ride ready. After attending the first part of the class, you will be eligible to move on to part two and three where we will be on bikes practicing handling drills and then go on a road ride where we put everything we learned into practice.

Smart cycling part two and three will take place on March 24th and also April 21st. All attendees must be a Bike Bakersfield member to participate. If you are not a member, you can sign up for only $25.

    Date: Monday, September 24th, 8 p.m.

    Location: Beach Park

About: Join us for a family-friendly, all-ages cruise starting at Beach Park and following the bike path to the Marketplace. The ride is finished once the group reaches the Marketplace, so make sure you have a plan to get back to where you started! Some like to park at the Marketplace and ride to Beach Park prior to the start of the ride so they may enjoy the rest of the evening without having to ride back.

FYI: California Vehicle Code requires bicyclists under age 18 to wear a helmet. The vehicle code also requires bicycles to have a front facing headlamp and at least a red rear facing reflector when being ridden at night. Its not only the law, but a great way to keep yourself safe!

Bike Bakersfield is hosting a Smart Cycling Course where you will learn all about your bike, riding in traffic, riding outside of traffic, signaling, turns, intersections, chains, cranks, cassettes, helmets, gear... the list goes on! We want you to ride safely, predictably and this course will teach you how! Plus we're going to have a great time while we do it.

Certified cycling instructors will lead the class, covering where to ride and how to manage traffic safely. The class information and structure is a condensed version of the League of American Bicyclists Smart Cycling class.

We will be riding on the streets downtown practicing the skills discussed after the safety presentation. You will need a helmet and a working bike for the class. If you need either of these, please come to Bike Bakersfield and we will get you fixed up!

Instead of paying for the course, participants are recommended to become a member of Bike Bakersfield. In addition to receiving the membership benefits, members will be allowed to take their smart cycling quick guides home to keep as a reference.

A League Cycling Instruction Seminar is coming to Bakersfield on Oct. 26-28 at the Career Resource Department located at 2727 F Street. This is a great opportunity to become a League Certified Instructor as these seminars are not commonly held in our area. Rio Oxas will be the coach of the seminar.

    Registration link: https://bikeleague.secure.force.com/lab_events?id=a0k1M00000Drt7Y
    Registration price: $350
    Late registration: $425.00 beginning Sept 29, 2018
    Registration closes: October 6 , 2018

All participants must have a membership to the League of American Bicyclists to attend the seminar for insurance purposes. Candidates can become members of the league here. Successful completion of Smart Cycling Course with a grade of 85 percent of better is required before registration for the LCI Seminar. Cancellation and transfer requests must be sent via email to education@bikeleague.org. Please review the cancellation policy that can be found on the registration link.

Timely communication with your coach, Rio Oxas, is essential to preparation, and candidates may be excluded if tasks are not completed by the deadlines. We expect that experienced cyclists are seeking certification and this class is meant primarily to focus on how best to teach bicycling education. Additionally, this weekend is not about riding, it's about teaching. Attendance at all seminar hours is mandatory, and does not guarantee certification.

Successful candidates will have a strong working knowledge of bikes and bike maintenance and a great deal of experience riding in high traffic scenarios. Successful candidates also have strong core values aligned with philosophies of the league, including helmet use, bicycling infrastructure, and full incorporation of the idea that all people who ride bicycles are equal cyclists, regardless of political affiliation, race, gender, age or religion and that all students deserve respectful, polite and meaningful instruction.

Class materials and assessment are included in the registration costs. Please note that there is required preparation for the course, including an Assessment Tool that must be returned to the course instructor at least 14 days prior to the start of the course.

If you have questions, contact the League Director of Education at 202-822-1333 or education@bikeleague.org.
